Hi, April and Michele!  My official title here at G&K is "Legal Secretary".  We do not have "legal assistants"; rather, the term that is used is "paralegal".  Our paralegals are required to have a paralegal certificate to attain that position.  My attorneys usually refer to me as their "assistant" rather than their "secretary", so I think in our firm the interchangeability (is that a word?) is between "legal secretary" and "legal assistant", rather than between "paralegal" and "legal assistant."  However, it seems that law firms can really differ on this distinction.

I currently support four attorneys, one of them virtually as she now lives in Maine (I'm in Wisconsin).

Replying to April and Michelle -- over the years, as companies have downsized, I suspect a lot of us have crossover jobs. I'm an executive assistant but have done patent docketing, document legalization, keeping minute books, and generally running documents for signatures during deals. I wish there was time for the attorneys to give us focused training, even in small segments. But since we had 2 paralegals leave and the other EA retire, our department is down to 9 people and we're always putting out fires all day.

Hi April,

I am interested in this field but not officially trained. I work with our CFO and Chief Legal Counsel on many items and find anything concerning legal matters very interesting. I am currently working on my Bachelors (returned to school in my 40s), double major in Business Administration and Accounting, and have chosen a minor in Legal Studies.

Good afternoon!

I am in my third week at Unum in Chattanooga, Law Department. I'm a Senior Legal Secretary, and I was excited to see this egroup available.

Are most participants in this group paralegals, legal secretaries, or a mix of both? I know in some firms, the titles are used interchangeably, although they really are two different roles. Either way, I'm glad to connect with a group with a legal specialty.

Thanks!
April

I need some quick help on how to set up my Word document (we're still in 2003) to use the California pleading standard of numbered lines on the left and a vertical line on the right side of the pleading.  Does anyone have a template you can send to me?

I've thought about this one, Maureen, as well as thinking about establishing something like this for what I do. I think each office is different. I working exclusively with Immigration and Bankruptcy, two entirely different ends of the law spectrum. What I do wouldn't be applicable to most paralegals. However, it would be a good idea for me to create a procedures manual.

Does anyone else work in these fields and have a procedures manual?

I am looking to hear from other Admins who work in the legal field and have to deal with page numbering, more specifically, working with documents like court appeals.  We have an old fashion date stamp/page numbering machine (Rapidprint ADN-E), which is really loud when it punches the numbers on the pages, as well as time consuming, since each page needs to be punched one at the time.  These appeals could contain hundreds or even thousand of pages.  I checked online and found this printer-type machine from Shear Tech (DS-6500/6600), which automatically feeds up to 200 pages at a speed of up to 6,300 doc/hour.  This machine looks great for this type of work, but it comes with a hefty tag of about $2,500, less shipping charges.  I would like to hear from you if you are familiar with this type of process and or equipment and would like to share your information.  Thanks!

Does anyone have written instructions on how to get EDGAR Codes and how to file SEC Forms?
